Extension Request Deadlines for Tax Filers
Extension Requests for Calendar Year Partnership Filers
Calendar year partnership filers are not eligible to request an extension for the 2023 tax year as the filing deadline has already passed.
Extension Requests for Individuals
Automatic Six-Month Extension
The IRS automatically grants taxpayers a six-month extension of time to file their taxes. This extension does not extend the deadline for paying any taxes owed.
Requesting an Additional Extension
If the automatic six-month extension is not sufficient, taxpayers can request an additional extension using Form 4868. This form must be submitted on or before the original filing deadline. The IRS will grant an additional extension for up to four months.
Important Considerations
Filing an extension does not grant taxpayers any additional time to pay their taxes. Taxes are due on the original filing deadline, regardless of whether an extension is requested.
Taxpayers should carefully consider whether an extension is necessary, as the IRS may impose penalties and interest on taxes paid late.
For more information on filing an extension, refer to the IRS website or consult with a tax professional.
